The calendar is the wrong thing to look at
People ask us in August whether it is “too late” for an exterior, and in April whether it is “too early”. Neither question has a date-based answer. What decides whether a coat of paint will bond and cure properly is the temperature of the surface it goes onto, the dew point, and how many hours of drying it gets before the evening damp arrives.
A 55°F afternoon in late October with low humidity and a south-facing wall in full sun is a better painting day than a muggy 80°F morning in July when the dew point is sitting at 72 and the siding has not dried out from overnight.
What we actually check
Surface temperature, not air temperature. Modern coatings are commonly rated down to 35–50°F depending on the product, and that rating is about the surface. A shaded north elevation can sit ten degrees below the air on the same afternoon.
Dew point. If the surface is within a few degrees of the dew point, moisture is condensing on it — and paint applied over that will not bond. This is the number that quietly ruins more autumn exteriors than cold does.
Remaining daylight. A coat needs to be dry to the touch before the temperature drops and the damp comes down in the evening. In November that means finishing earlier in the day than the light suggests.
The honest seasonal picture in Southern Maryland
Late spring through to early autumn is the widest window, and it is when we do most exterior work. Through October the window narrows but stays workable on the right days — we simply start later in the morning and finish earlier in the afternoon.
By late November we are into days where only a few hours are genuinely usable, and we would rather hold your project to spring than squeeze it in. A rushed coat looks identical in December and starts failing in March, and we are the ones who have to come back and fix it under the warranty.
What that means if you are thinking about booking
If your exterior is on the list for this year, getting a walkthrough booked now is worth doing — not because of pressure, but because the number of workable days between here and the end of the season is finite, and they fill up.
