Can You Paint Inside in Winter? A Southern Maryland Guide

Finished work by ARM Premium Painting

Once the leaves come down, the calls we get change. Exterior jobs wind down, and homeowners start asking about the inside of the house: the living room before family visits for the holidays, a nursery before a spring due date, a full repaint before listing a home in the spring.

The question we hear most is simple: can you paint inside in winter? Yes. In Southern Maryland, December and January are some of the best months of the year for interior painting. Here is why, what we do differently when it’s cold outside, and how to get on our schedule.

Why winter is a good time to paint inside

Heated air is dry air

Humidity is the enemy of drying paint. Southern Maryland summers are humid, and on a muggy July day a freshly painted wall can stay soft for hours. In winter, with the heat running and the windows mostly closed, indoor air is much drier. Water-based paint dries more evenly, and the crew can move from coat to coat on schedule.

Easier scheduling

Spring and summer are the busiest seasons for most painting contractors, because that is when exterior work can be done. In winter, our crews are focused on interiors, which usually means more flexibility on your start date. That is also why winter slots are limited: they fill up in the order they are confirmed.

Finished before the busy season of your year

A winter repaint means the house is ready before you host, before a new baby arrives, or before you put the house on the market in spring. If you are selling, fresh walls and clean trim are one of the simplest ways to get a home ready for listing photos.

You get to see your colors in the worst light

That sounds like a drawback, but it helps. Winter daylight is lower and cooler. A color that still looks good on a gray January afternoon will look good all year. We always recommend putting samples on two or three walls and checking them morning and evening before deciding.

What we do differently in the cold months

Painting in winter is straightforward when it is planned. Here is what changes on our jobs between December and February.

  • We keep the rooms warm. Every paint has a minimum temperature on its label, and it applies overnight too, while the paint is still drying. We’ll ask you not to turn the heat down in rooms we’re working in until the paint has cured.
  • We ventilate without freezing the house. Today’s low-odor, low-VOC interior paints make this easy. Fans move most of the air, and windows only need to be cracked briefly.
  • We protect against winter boots. Salt and slush are hard on floors. We cover our path through your home and keep it clean, because clean, respectful worksites are one of the four promises we build every job around.
  • We check the finish in good light. In December the sun sets before 5 p.m. Roller marks and missed spots are easy to miss in a dim room, so the finish gets checked under bright light before a room is called done.
  • We keep dust out of your heating system. During sanding and drywall repair, we cover the return vents so dust doesn’t circulate through the house. It’s a good idea to change your furnace filter after the job.

Projects that work well in winter

  • Whole-home or multi-room repaints. The biggest jobs benefit most from flexible scheduling.
  • Ceilings, trim, doors and crown molding. These are the details that make a room look finished, and they are easy to put off until a slower season.
  • Kitchen cabinet painting. Cabinet enamel needs time to cure, and a heated, dry house helps. Read our guide to what makes painted cabinets last.
  • Drywall repairs from summer leaks or storms, finished and painted so the patch disappears.
  • Luxury vinyl plank flooring in the same rooms, so the walls and floors are done in one visit.
  • Offices and shops over the holidays. Many businesses close or slow down between Christmas and New Year. That is a good window for commercial painting with minimal disruption.

One project that usually waits for spring: epoxy floor coating in an unheated garage. Epoxy needs warmth to cure, so unless the space is heated, we’ll schedule it once the weather turns.

Not sure what finish to choose? Our room-by-room paint sheen guide covers it.

How booking works

  1. Call or request a quote. Call (240) 981-4472 at any hour, or fill in the free quote form.
  2. Free walkthrough. We look at the rooms, the walls and the trim, and talk through color and sheen.
  3. Clear written estimate. Every room, the prep, the number of coats and the products, in writing. If you book by November 30 for December or January, the winter price is on the quote.
  4. Your start date. We confirm the schedule and the order we’ll work through the rooms.
  5. Prep, paint and final walkthrough. We walk the job with you at the end and don’t call it finished until you’re happy.

Questions homeowners ask us

Can you paint interior walls in winter?

Yes. As long as the house is heated to the temperature range on the paint label, including overnight, interior paint goes on and dries well in winter. The dry indoor air in a heated home often helps.

Do I need to open the windows when painting in winter?

Not wide open. With today’s low-odor, low-VOC paints, a few fans move enough air for most rooms. We crack windows briefly when needed, without letting the rooms we’ve just painted get cold.

Does paint take longer to dry in winter?

Not indoors, if the house is warm. Cold rooms slow drying, so keep the heat at your normal setting. Humidity slows drying too, and the air in a heated house in winter is usually drier than it is in summer.

How far ahead should I book winter interior painting?

As early as you can. Winter slots are limited and booked in the order they are confirmed. To get our winter pricing, book by November 30, 2026, for work in December 2026 or January 2027.
