Older ranchers and split-levels
The original trim in Millersville’s older housing is often oil-based and glossy. Painting straight over it with a modern water-based enamel without de-glossing and sanding is the most common cause of trim paint that peels off in strips a year later.
Done properly — sanded, cleaned, bonding-primed — a modern hybrid enamel gives you a harder, better-looking finish than the original ever had.
Nineties colonials
These are usually straightforward, and the main decision is sheen rather than preparation. Builder flat looks good on day one and stops cleaning up by year two. Moving hallways, stairwells and children’s bedrooms to an eggshell or satin is a small cost difference and a large practical one.
Choosing colour in a real room
Colour behaves differently depending on your light, your ceiling height and what your floors are doing. A grey that reads warm in a south-facing room can go distinctly blue on a north wall.
Put samples on the actual wall, look at them in the morning and in the evening, and give it a day before deciding. We would rather spend an extra week on that than repaint a room twice.
