Wash and brighten
Under Crofton’s mature tree canopy, decks pick up mildew and organic staining as well as UV damage. Washing removes the surface dirt; a brightener neutralises the cleaner and lifts the greyed surface fibres so the timber underneath can take stain properly.
Fix the structure before the finish
Loose boards get secured, popped fasteners are reset, and split or soft boards are flagged for replacement. There is no point staining a board that needs to come out.
It is also worth checking the ledger connection and the stair stringers while everything is exposed — a refinish is the natural moment to catch a structural problem.
Sand where it matters
Not every deck needs sanding, but handrails do. Anywhere hands go should be smooth, and raised grain after washing is what causes splinters.
Stain in the right conditions
The timber has to be genuinely dry — usually a couple of days after washing — and it should not go on in full midday sun, which flashes the stain before it can penetrate. Early morning or late afternoon gives a far better result.
